Heart and Vascular Health
Heart disease and stroke are two of the leading causes of death in the United States. Americans suffer 1.5 million heart attacks and strokes each year. There are several types of heart disease that are risk factors for stroke. Similarly, stroke is a risk factor for coronary heart disease. Both heart disease and stroke share several of the same risk factors. These factors include having high levels of bad cholesterol called low-density lipoproteins (LDL), and low levels of the good cholesterol, also called low-density lipoprotein (HDL). Additional factors include having high blood pressure, obesity or being overweight, smoking, diabetes, lack of physical exercise and a poor diet.
